Do Digital Libraries Make Physical Libraries Unnecessary?

Question

As more books and research materials become available online, some people think public libraries will no longer be necessary in the future. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Band 7 Model Answer

Digital access has transformed the way people read, study, and search for information. Even so, I do not agree that physical libraries will become unnecessary, because they serve educational and social functions that go beyond storing books.

It is true that online libraries offer major advantages. Users can search large databases quickly, access materials from home, and often obtain information instantly rather than waiting for printed copies. For researchers and students, this convenience is extremely valuable. Digital resources also save physical space and can make rare material available to a much wider audience.

However, public libraries are more than archives. They provide quiet study environments, internet access for people without reliable technology at home, and professional guidance from librarians. In many communities, they also function as public spaces where children attend reading programs and adults join workshops or cultural events. These services are difficult to replicate fully through a screen.

In my view, libraries will evolve rather than disappear. Their role may shift from book storage toward learning support and community services, while still maintaining some physical collections. Therefore, digital libraries should be seen as an expansion of access, not as a reason to abandon physical library spaces altogether.
