Automation and Employment

Question

Some people think automation will lead to widespread unemployment, while others believe it will create more jobs than it removes. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Band 7 Model Answer

Automation is transforming industries at a rapid pace, and its impact on employment remains widely debated. While some workers will undoubtedly be displaced, I believe new roles and sectors will emerge, meaning the long-term effect can be positive if governments and employers invest in retraining.

Those who fear automation point to routine occupations that are easily performed by machines. Roles in manufacturing, data entry, and basic customer service are already being reduced in some countries. Workers with limited digital skills may struggle to find similar employment, which can increase inequality and social tension if support systems are weak.

On the other hand, technological change has historically created new kinds of work. Automation can raise productivity, lower costs, and expand markets, which in turn generates demand for engineers, analysts, maintenance specialists, and service professionals. In addition, when machines handle repetitive tasks, human workers can focus on responsibilities requiring judgment, creativity, and communication.

In my opinion, automation itself is not the main threat; the real challenge is the speed of transition. Policymakers should prioritize lifelong learning, vocational training, and career support so workers can move into emerging fields. With strong adaptation policies, job creation can outweigh job losses.
