Trading Personal Data for Better Online Services

Question

Many online companies collect large amounts of personal data in order to provide more convenient and personalized services. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Band 7 Model Answer

Personal data has become one of the most valuable resources in the digital economy. Companies argue that collecting user information allows them to offer faster, smarter, and more relevant services. While these benefits are real, I believe the disadvantages are more serious because privacy loss and misuse of data can affect people in lasting ways.

On the positive side, personalized services can save time and improve user experience. Navigation apps suggest faster routes, streaming platforms recommend relevant content, and online stores display products that match a person's interests. Many consumers appreciate this convenience because it reduces effort and makes digital tools feel efficient and responsive.

The problem is that people often surrender far more information than they realize. Data can reveal habits, location, health concerns, and even political preferences. Once collected, it may be shared, sold, or exposed through security breaches. This creates risks that users cannot fully control, especially because privacy policies are often vague or too long for ordinary people to read carefully.

In my view, convenience should not come at the cost of weak privacy protections. Data collection should be limited, transparent, and based on meaningful consent. Personalized services are useful, but they are only acceptable when users clearly understand what is being taken from them and how it will be used.
