Is Remote Work a Positive Long-Term Change?
Question
Band 7 Model Answer
Working from home was once limited to a small minority of employees, but it has now become normal in many sectors. I see this as a largely positive development because it gives workers greater flexibility and can improve productivity, although it also creates challenges for teamwork and work-life boundaries.
The strongest argument in favor of remote work is flexibility. Employees save commuting time and often have more control over their daily schedule, which can reduce stress. For many parents and people with long travel times, this arrangement makes employment more manageable. Businesses may also benefit by reducing office costs and recruiting staff from a wider geographical area.
However, remote work is not ideal in every situation. Some employees feel isolated when they spend most of the week away from colleagues, and informal learning is harder for younger workers who benefit from direct supervision. In addition, home-based work can blur the boundary between professional and personal life, especially if employers expect constant availability.
Overall, I believe remote work is positive when it is managed sensibly. The best long-term model is often a flexible one in which employees can work remotely for part of the week while still meeting colleagues in person when collaboration is important. This arrangement preserves freedom without losing human connection or accountability.
