Does Social Media Improve Communication?
Question
Band 7 Model Answer
Social media has become one of the most influential communication tools of modern life. It enables instant contact and information exchange, yet it can also reduce the quality of interactions and spread harmful content. Overall, I consider its impact mixed, though slightly positive when used responsibly.
A key advantage is convenience. People can maintain relationships across long distances and share updates in real time. Social platforms also give individuals a voice in public discussions and allow communities with shared interests to form quickly. During emergencies, social media can deliver important information faster than traditional channels.
However, online communication often lacks depth compared with face-to-face conversation. Short messages can be misunderstood, and many users present idealized versions of their lives, which may create social pressure. Another concern is misinformation, which can spread rapidly and influence public opinion before facts are verified.
In my view, social media is a useful tool but not a complete substitute for direct interaction. People should develop digital literacy and balance online engagement with real-world communication. With this approach, society can benefit from connectivity while limiting the negative effects.
