Speaking Part 1Lifestyle

Prompt

How do you usually spend your weekends?

This is a model answer for learning purposes. It is not the only possible high-scoring response.

Band 9 sample transcript

It depends a bit on the week, but I try to keep my weekends balanced. On Saturday morning I usually do a few practical things first, like grocery shopping and tidying up, just so I don’t have that hanging over me. After that I’ll head out for something active—either a long walk, a gym session, or meeting a friend for a casual game of badminton.

Saturday evening is my “switch-off” time. I normally cook something simple at home, watch a film, or catch up on a series. If I’ve had a stressful week, I’ll try to get an early night rather than going out.

On Sundays I slow down a lot more. I like having a proper breakfast and then planning the week ahead—checking my calendar, doing some light meal prep, and getting my bag and clothes ready. I also try to set aside an hour or two for reading or learning something new online. Overall, I use weekends to recharge, but I still like to feel I’ve done something useful.

Why this answer scores highly

explanation

Fluency is sustained with natural linking and chunking; vocabulary is varied but appropriate for Part 1; grammar shows range (conditionals, relative clauses, gerunds) with accurate control; and pronunciation would be supported by clear stress patterns in contrasts (Saturday vs Sunday) and emphasis on key phrases.

Pronunciation and fluency notes

  • Use clear contrastive stress: SATurday vs SUNday.
  • Linking for fluency: ‘After that I’ll’ / ‘On Sundays I’ (avoid pauses between function words).
  • Sentence stress on key nouns/verbs: ‘grocery shopping’, ‘switch-off time’, ‘plan the week ahead’.
  • Keep a steady pace; avoid rushing the list of activities—group them into chunks.
