IELTS Speaking Band 9 Sample Answers: Describe a time you visited a local market.

A local market I visited recently is a Sunday farmers’ market held in a square near the river in my city. It is not enormous, but there are usually fifty or sixty stalls selling fruit, vegetables, bread, cheese, flowers and food that people can eat there. I went there with my sister one bright morning in early spring, mainly because she wanted to buy ingredients for lunch.

We bought a loaf of sourdough, some tomatoes and a small jar of local honey, but I probably spent more time looking at the prepared-food stalls. One stall was making flatbreads to order, so we shared one with roasted vegetables and a spicy yoghurt sauce while we walked around. What I enjoyed was being able to speak directly to the people who had grown or made the products, because several of them explained where the food came from.

The market was busier than a normal shop, but it felt less rushed, and people seemed willing to stop, taste something and have a short conversation. I enjoyed the visit because it made ordinary grocery shopping feel more social, and I have been back a few times since, although I still use a supermarket for most practical things.
