Should Young Adults Do Compulsory Community Service?

Question

Some people believe that all young adults should be required to do a period of community service after finishing school. Do you agree or disagree?

Band 7 model answer

Many countries are searching for ways to strengthen social responsibility among younger generations. Requiring all young adults to complete community service may appear attractive for this reason, but I only partly agree because the value of service declines if participation is entirely compulsory.

There are several arguments in favor of the idea. Community work can expose young people to social problems they might otherwise ignore, such as loneliness among the elderly or environmental neglect in public spaces. It may also help them develop practical skills, empathy, and a stronger sense of citizenship. In societies where young people come from very different backgrounds, shared service could even encourage social cohesion.

Nevertheless, mandatory participation creates problems. If people are forced into service without genuine commitment, the work may be done poorly and resented by participants. Some school leavers also need to begin work immediately or support family members financially, so a compulsory unpaid period could be unfair. In such cases, the policy might create frustration rather than civic spirit.

In my opinion, governments should strongly encourage community service and reward it through scholarships, recognition, or career advantages, rather than forcing everyone to take part. Voluntary systems with meaningful incentives are more likely to attract sincere effort and produce better social outcomes than rigid universal obligations.

The value of a model answer is comparison. Once you see the structure, the useful move is to find out why your own draft is lower and what needs to change before the next attempt.
