Critics argue that these convenient meals damage people’s health, while supporters see them as a time-saving solution for modern life. I agree that the convenience is real, but I believe the overall health impact has been largely negative.
Those who are concerned about health point out that many takeaway options are high in calories and low in nutrients. Typical menu items contain large amounts of salt, sugar and saturated fat, yet relatively little fibre, fruit or vegetables. If such food becomes a routine choice, it can contribute to obesity and increase the likelihood of illnesses such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Another issue is habit formation: aggressive advertising and oversized portions can normalise frequent snacking and lead children to prefer highly processed flavours.
On the other hand, ready-made meals clearly make daily life easier. People with long commutes, multiple jobs or caring responsibilities may have limited time and energy to cook. Buying dinner on the way home—or ordering it through delivery platforms—can reduce planning, shopping and washing up. In some cases, these outlets are also more accessible than supermarkets, particularly late at night, and many brands now provide nutritional information and include salads or grilled items.
Even so, I think society pays a high price when convenience depends on poor diet. The better solution is to make fast, healthy alternatives more available and affordable, so saving time does not require sacrificing wellbeing.
