Nevertheless, I argue that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages because these platforms dramatically widen access to connection, knowledge and practical opportunities.
The most obvious benefit is connectivity across distance and social boundaries. Families can maintain daily contact through group chats, voice notes and video calls, which is invaluable for migrants, international students and people in long-distance relationships. Crucially, social media also helps users find communities they may lack offline: carers of disabled children, people with rare medical conditions, or learners of niche skills can exchange advice and emotional support, reducing isolation and improving wellbeing.
A second advantage is the speed and reach with which information circulates. During emergencies, authorities and eyewitnesses can share updates instantly, helping others avoid danger or access services. In education and work, professionals can network, collaborate and build reputations publicly; for example, a designer can showcase a portfolio on Instagram or LinkedIn and secure clients without an expensive marketing budget. In this sense, communication becomes not only faster but more economically empowering.
Admittedly, the downsides are serious. False claims can spread faster than corrections, and attention-driven feeds encourage constant checking, anxiety and performative interaction. However, these harms are not inevitable: media-literacy training, stronger platform accountability and personal boundaries—such as disabling push notifications and curating one’s feed—can reduce the impact.
Overall, while social media can distort communication when used carelessly, its ability to connect people, distribute useful information and create opportunities makes it a net positive development.
