Speaking Part 1Transport

Prompt

How often do you use public transport?

This is a model answer for learning purposes. It is not the only possible high-scoring response.

Band 9 sample transcript

Band 9 sample transcript

Probably four or five times a week, although it varies a bit depending on my schedule. I normally use the metro for longer journeys across the city because it’s faster and more predictable than taking a car at busy times. If I’m only going a couple of stops, I’ll usually walk instead, especially when the weather is good.

What I like is that I can read or answer messages while I’m travelling, rather than concentrating on the road. The main downside is rush hour, when the trains can get extremely crowded and the journey feels much less comfortable. Even so, public transport is still the easiest way for me to get around most of the week.

Why this answer scores highly

explanation

The response uses controlled comparisons, a conditional exception and precise transport phrases such as “busy times”, “rush hour” and “get around”. The drawback is acknowledged without losing focus.

what this question tests

This question tests frequency, routine and basic transport evaluation. A strong answer gives a clear number or frequency phrase and one or two reasons for that pattern.

Natural phrases to reuse

Pronunciation and fluency notes

  • Give the weekly frequency first so the examiner never has to infer it from your examples.
  • Use “Even so” lightly; it should sound like a natural conclusion, not formal essay linking.
