Should Schools Spend More on Teachers Than Technology?
Question
Band 7 Model Answer
School systems regularly face difficult choices about how to improve student outcomes with limited budgets. While educational technology can support learning, I believe investing in strong teachers should remain the higher priority because human instruction has a deeper and more consistent impact on student development.
Those who support greater spending on technology argue that digital tools can widen access to information and make lessons more engaging. Interactive software allows students to practice independently, while online resources can expose them to materials that a school library might not provide. Technology also helps teachers manage assessment more efficiently and can support individualized learning when used well.
However, even the best devices are only as effective as the teaching behind them. Skilled teachers explain complex ideas clearly, respond to confusion immediately, and motivate students in ways that software cannot fully match. They also create discipline, classroom culture, and emotional support, all of which influence academic performance. A school full of modern equipment but weak teaching staff is unlikely to produce strong results.
In my view, technology should enhance education rather than drive it. Schools should first ensure they attract, train, and retain excellent teachers, then provide digital tools that genuinely support instruction. This sequence is more sensible because technology is most valuable when it is guided by professional judgment rather than treated as a replacement for it.
