IELTS Speaking Band 9 Sample Answers: Describe a hobby you would like to start.

A hobby I would like to start is pottery, particularly learning how to make simple bowls and cups on a wheel. I have tried hand-building clay once at a workshop, but I have never learned the more technical process of using a wheel properly. It appeals to me because it combines creativity with something physical, which would be a useful change from work that often involves screens.

To begin, I would probably join a beginner class because buying a wheel and all the tools before knowing whether I enjoyed it would be excessive. I would need access to clay, basic tools, glazing materials and, most importantly, a kiln, so a shared studio makes much more sense than doing it alone at home. I would also need patience because the few videos I have seen make the process look much easier than it probably is.

I think pottery would help me slow down because you have to concentrate on one object and respond to what the material is doing in front of you. It would also be satisfying to finish with something tangible, even if the first few pieces were imperfect, because I rarely make physical objects in my normal routine.
